Julien Hudson, 1839
(American, 1811 - 1844)
The son of a mixed-race mother and white British father, Hudson was born free in New Orleans. He studied in Louisiana with Antoine Meucci, an itinerant miniaturist painter, then traveled to Paris to study with Alexandre Abel de Pujol. Hudson’s untimely death at age 33 brought his enigmatic career to an end. Only a small body of his work survives.
